Most people wear glasses for extended periods of time, only replacing them when they break. However, this bad habit of not replacing glasses for extended periods of time can only worsen myopia.
So how often should glasses be replaced? Depending on the wearer and the material of the glasses, the replacement cycle is not fixed. Changes should be made based on changes in refractive power and lens usage. The replacement cycle also varies for people of different ages, as their bodies change.
一.How long does it take to replace glasses at different ages?
1. Teenagers: It's recommended to replace glasses every six months to one year.
Teenagers are at their peak eye use, and refractive issues often include myopia. Prescription changes are relatively rapid at this age, so after getting glasses, they should be rechecked every six months to one year. If there's a significant change, replacement is necessary.
2. Adults: It's recommended to replace glasses every one and a half to two years.
Adults have matured, and their prescription tends to be stable. We recommend annual eye exams. If the prescription changes by more than 50 degrees, or if scratches or damage occur, replacement is recommended.
3. Seniors: Regular replacement is recommended.
Seniors also need regular replacement of their reading glasses. However, because prescription changes are slower in older people, there's no strict time limit.
二. What are the dangers of not changing glasses for a long time?
Glasses are custom-made based on precise calculations of various eye parameters at the time of fitting.
With continued use, glasses lenses can develop varying degrees of wear, scratches, and yellowing. This can affect the lenses' optical correction function, preventing them from effectively improving vision and causing negative effects such as eye fatigue and decreased vision.
Children and adolescents should be especially vigilant. If you notice your child squinting, tilting their head, or leaning too close to read, take them to a doctor for an examination immediately.
三. What are the symptoms of expired glasses?
The average lifespan of glasses is about two years. "Excessive" glasses may experience a range of issues, including yellowing, wear, and prescription discrepancies.
1. Yellowing and reduced light transmittance
Our lenses are generally transparent. Over time, as well as changes in the environment and temperature, the coating and the material undergo physical changes, causing the originally transparent lenses to gradually turn yellow.
2. Scratches, affecting performance
Extensive scratches on lenses can affect refraction and optical correction. Daily contact with chemicals, oils, and other substances can also damage the lenses.
3. Prescription discrepancies, affecting vision
As myopia worsens, wearing old glasses can cause symptoms such as blurred vision, dizziness, and eye pain. Children and adolescents, in particular, are prone to worsening myopia due to the constant changes in refractive power caused by growth and development, necessitating timely replacement of their glasses.
4. Frame deformation and optical center deviation
Glasses may become deformed over time due to prolonged wear. Frame deformation not only affects aesthetics but also causes the optical center of the lens to shift horizontally, leading to a prismatic effect. This increases the strain on the eye's accommodation function and impairs vision.
5. Damaged edges breed bacteria
Long-term wear of glasses can cause patina to form on hard-to-clean areas like the edges and nose pads, making them a breeding ground for bacteria. Over time, this not only affects appearance but can also lead to eye problems.
四. How to care for glasses to extend the life of the lenses
1. When storing glasses, keep the convex side of the lenses facing up to avoid scratching them. When not in use for extended periods, it's best to store them in a case.
2. Avoid leaving glasses near heaters or stoves, and avoid showering with them. High temperatures can cause deformation and damage the lenses' optical properties.
3. Avoid scratching the lenses by wiping them with clothing or paper towels. Use a clean, eyeglass-specific cleaning cloth instead. If the lenses are very dirty, apply diluted dishwashing liquid evenly to the surface, rinse with clean water, and let them air dry in a cool, well-ventilated area. You can also apply clean toilet paper to the lenses to remove any water stains.
4. When putting on or taking off your glasses, hold the temples with both hands and pull them forward or backward, parallel to your cheeks. Putting them on or off with one hand can easily cause the frames to warp.
5. Check the components of your glasses regularly. Tighten any loose screws immediately.
