Many parents are confused: If one eye is nearsighted and the other is not, is it necessary to correct it? Sure, they can see clearly without glasses, but sometimes their eyes tire easily, and they even feel a little dizzy and nauseous... What should they do?

Generally speaking, as the eyes develop, almost everyone experiences some variation in refractive power; perfectly identical eyes are rare. However, if the refractive power differs by more than 250 degrees between the two eyes, this is clinically referred to as anisometropia. If not corrected promptly, it can lead to more rapid vision loss in the "bad eye," monocular amblyopia, exotropia, and other symptoms.

Anisometropia can significantly impact eye development, manifesting in the following ways:

NO.1 Eye Fatigue
Anisometropia causes a significant difference in the diopter between the two eyes, which can easily lead to visual fatigue, dry eyes, tearing, headaches, nausea, and dizziness. It can also lead to errors in judging distances and angles, posing a safety hazard when walking or driving.

NO.2 The "worse eye" experiences faster vision loss

There's a principle of "use it, lose it" when using your eyes: "use it, lose it." This means that the better eye should be used regularly, while the worse eye should be gradually disused. This can cause the worse eye to experience a faster increase in myopia and a faster decline in vision.

NO.3 It can cause monocular amblyopia/exotropia
When a child has anisometropia between their eyes, the eye with the smaller diopter sees more clearly, while the eye with the larger diopter sees less clearly. The brain is unable to integrate the two images of varying clarity. Consequently, the brain prioritizes the smaller eye over the larger one. Over time, the larger eye develops amblyopia. As mentioned above, when a child has anisometropia, the visual development of the weaker eye is also inhibited. If not effectively treated, the weaker eye may develop exotropia over time.
NO.4 How to Prevent Anisometropia
In daily life, avoid tilting your head when looking at close objects. Place the object in front of both eyes and focus on it simultaneously. Side-sleeping and improper pen-holding can lead to varying degrees of anisometropia and require prompt correction.

In addition, appropriate vitamin A and lutein supplements can help relieve eye fatigue and protect the eyes.
