How do you usually clean your glasses? Do you wipe them with the corner of your clothes, blow on them and then wipe them dry with a tissue, or simply wipe them with a lens cloth? These seemingly simple actions could be damaging your lenses without you even realizing it.

1

Your lenses are actually quite delicate.

Today's lenses are mostly made of polymer materials that are lighter and more light-transmitting, such as resin. Its surface is covered with several layers of fine coatings, each of which has its own purpose: Anti-reflection film: reduces reflections, increases light transmittance, reduces the scattering rate of the lens, and makes seeing things clearer. Anti-static film: prevents dust, fluff, paper scraps, etc. from easily sticking to the lens. Waterproof and oil-proof film: prevents water droplets and oil stains from adhering easily. Wear-resistant film: As the outermost layer, it is responsible for resisting small scratches during daily use. Once these film layers are damaged, the glasses are not just "unable to see clearly". Not only will the clarity decrease, scattered light, ghosting, fog or glare are likely to occur, and the eyes are also more easily tired.

These common cleaning mistakes may be what you are doing

Dry wiping with clothing or paper towels is one of the most damaging things you can do to your lenses.

Dust on your lenses is like small grains of sand; wiping them with dry cloth is like using sandpaper to remove the coating.

2

While simply wiping these items with alcohol or dishwashing liquid can remove oil, long-term use can corrode the coating. Even low-concentration alcohol cleaning pads are not recommended for daily use.

Rinsing with water without wiping dry can remove dust, but if you don't wipe dry promptly, residual scale will cause the lenses to become increasingly blurry.

Cleaning like this makes glasses more durable

Prefer a neutral detergent that's alcohol-free, ammonia-free, and fragrance-free. These cleaners are specifically designed for lens coatings and effectively remove oil and dust without corrosive effects. Rinse with clean, running water, preferably room-temperature tap water; avoid hot or ice water.

4 tips for maintaining your glasses

Many people are accustomed to putting on and taking off their glasses with one hand, but this can cause the metal frame to deform and the lenses to not fit the frame well. The correct way is to "hold the frame with both hands on each side and gently put it on and off."

3

When not wearing glasses, place them in a case. Avoid leaving them on a table, in your pocket, or in your bag. Avoid placing your glasses with hard objects like keys and cell phones, as this can easily scratch the lenses and deform the frames.

Avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures, which can cause the lens coating to deform and peel. The frames can also age and discolor due to high temperatures.

Inspect your glasses regularly every 1-2 months to check for scratches, peeling coating, and frame deformation. If you notice visible scratches that affect your vision, replace them promptly to avoid further visual fatigue.
